Moon River was written by
Henry Mancini (music) and
Johnny Mercer (lyrics) in 1961. It was first introduced in the movie
Breakfast at Tiffany's, in which Audrey Hepburn sang it.
I'd like to point your attention to the rapid chord changes that occurs in the middle of the verse.
(
Wherever you're going, I'm going your way)
We can break these chords into three sets of two chords:
1) F#Ø-B9 (F#Ø is pronounced
F sharp half-diminished.)
2) Em7-A9
3) Dm7-G9.
All of these three sets are two-five motions in preparation for the first chord of the next set. F#Ø-B9 is a two-five for Em7, Em7-A9 is for Dm7 and Dm7-G9 is a two-five for CΔ7 which occurs when we take the repeat sign.
The song's key is C major, therefore we can label those chords as #IVØ(F#Ø), VII7(B9), IIIm7(Em7), VI7(A9), IIm7(Dm7) and V7(G9). This #IVØ-VII7-IIIm7-VI7-IIm7-V7 sequence can be found in a number of tunes written in the mid-20th century:
Like Someone in Love,
Stella By Starlight and
Over The Rainbow, to name a few.
