Home On The Range
Music: Daniel Kelley

Sheet music
Home On The Range was written by Brewster Higley (lyrics) and Daniel Kelley (music) was written circa 1873. It was later arranged by David Guion in the early 20th century, and was adopted as the state song of Kansas.

This is the beginning of the melody. Time-wise, the tune is in 6/8, where you count in 6 when you play it, like "one, two, three, four, five, six". Or you can count in 3.

As you can tell from the lyrics below, this song is a very country-ish one. The challenge for this arrangement was to incorporate some sort of city-esque sophistication.

(Lyrics excerpt)
Oh give me a home where the buffalo roam
Where the deer and the antelope play
Where seldom is heard a discouraging word
And the skies are not cloudy all day

This is from the chorus section, where you would be singing "Home, home on the range.." if it were a vocal version.
