2009.07.02 - San Francisco (part 5)

June 26, 2009 Fri (continued)

After the meal, we walked to SF Moma (after stopping by at an Irish pub for a beer) and kind of played around in the museum shop. Around 15:00 I went back to the hotel and slept like a log. This is the second hotel I stayed at during the visit. The Opal was a much better hotel and I wished I had booked it for the entire trip, but Monarch Hotel's rate for Friday was much cheaper. So I stayed at The Opal on Wednesday and Thursday, and at Monarch Hotel on Friday. For the next visit, I'll probably book The Opal exclusively, regardless of the rate comparison. It's so much better.

Woke up around 21:00, went to downtown and ate a chicken-yogurt gyro at a Greek sandwich house called California (255 Kearny St.). The gyro was very nice, especially with the yogurt, but the $1.50 coffee sucked. By the way Hon's Wun-tun House is also on the Kearny. I'll remember this street as a good-restaurants street.

Watched Ellen DeGeneres' stand-up on HBO 2 around 3:00. She's so funny and interesting. I liked it very much. Once again, on American television, even the most casual programs are kind of educational.

Checked out at the Monarch hotel at 9:40. Took a bus to O'Farrell/Powell and bought two short-sleeve shirts at H&M. Then walked to the KX bus stop at Mission/7th, arriving there a little too early, at 11:00, to take the 11:20 bus. I should have stopped by at a restaurant on the way or something. I'll tell you why in a minute.

While waiting for the bus to the airport, I struck a conversion with a guy waiting for another bus: his deceased wife was Japanese. When I took this bus into the City, it didn't give me change, and I thought it was some kind of a mystery e.g. machine trouble or doggy intention by the driver, etc. But as the bus approached here, I increasingly became aware of the possibility that the bus just isn't geared for giving back any change to passengers. So I asked this guy I was talking with and he confirmed the bus's inability to do so.

All I had in my wallet was one $10 bill and $4.30. So, in order to take the $4.50 bus which doesn't give you change, you'd have to pay $10, which is a $5.50 waste. In a hurry, I asked the guy if he had any change for $10 and he said no. Then I asked if he had a spare quarter I could take because that would make $4.50 combined with what I had, and he said yes - he had two. So I took his quarters thankfully, but, for some crazy reason, I also gave him a $1 bill in exchange for that. I was rushing and I was losing clear thinking. (Next)
