"Best Outcome" (Kid D's & Masa Oka)

Written & Produced: 2009-2010
Drift Me On imageBest Outcome is a tune I co-wrote with Kid D's during the New Year holidays in 2010. Kid D's is a rapper based in Toronto who used to live in Tokyo around 2005.

This project actually started as a remix of the original version that already existed. The original was produced by Kid D's himself entirely.

Sometime in December 2009, he sent me the rap part of the track asking me if I wanted to remix. I had already known and liked that song for quite a while, and I knew I would have much free time during the holidays, so I said yes and began to work.

I took the rap part, edited it and eliminated some portions from it so it's in a bit simpler form. Then I laid down some beats, put chords, wrote basslines and used Autotune to write a melody for the chorus section.

Autotune is a piece of software which can change the musical pitch of audio signal. It can be used to correct mistakes in sung melodies, or to create a robot-like effect in the vocal. Both of these applications are frequently seen in pop productions these days. In Best Outcome, the chorus section was originally performed in the "rap" way, like the verses. So I used Autotune to give each words of the chorus a musical pitch, thus turning it to be like a song.

To do that, all you need to do was insert Autotune into the vocal track, write a melody in a MIDI track and set the destination of the MIDI information to the Autotune.Continue to the right column

(Chorus)
The worse scenario the best outcome
It always gets worse before it get better
Hope it gets better, hope it gets better

(Verse 1)
What could be so bad if lightening struck
You got hit by a truck, you got hit by a rock
You lost yours shoes, don’t know what to do
And now you got no money
Locked my keys in the car with the motor running
Can’t get far with the girls with no pay coming
Divorce is on its way but it’s okay
Call the police or call my lawyer

What could be so bad if you're sad you cry
If you hold your breathe too long you die
Cross the tracks the gate is down
And now you hear the whistle sound
Everybody knows when it rains it pours
Everybody knows when it snows it’s cold
Everybody knows when you snooze you lose
Be safe than sorry

(Verse 2)
What could be so bad when the earthquake strikes
Time is ticking, the world's gonna drop
Your mind be flippin' when the buildings rock
You feel like you're drunk when the ground pushes up
What could be so bad, I got so much to do
I sit on my ass, I do nothing it's true
What could be so bad if life's such a boy
You gotta hate something to love something more

What could be so bad if ignorance is bliss
And the world can break you and you're such a mess
You give too much, people take too much
People in your life gotta add to your life
What could be so bad when you can't even eat
A piece of bread and there's six to feed
War in the news that's all that we see
The rich get richer, the poor get fucked

This is how the chorus part goes. The song is in the key of G major, and it starts with a CΔ7 (C major seven) chord. CΔ7 is a IV (four) chord in this key. Then it goes to a G chord which is based on the note of B (Gadd9/B), before a quick Bb7. Then it takes a II-V (two five) pattern, Am7-D9, before resolving to GΔ7 which is a I (one) chord. The last two chords are a II-V for CΔ7 coming next.
